How to Maintain Healthy Vision

Human beings have five senses, and sight is the most important. The sense of sight allows you to take in information and helps you stay safe. Also, you use your eyes to enjoy the beauty of the world. To continue to enjoy this sense, you need to maintain healthy vision. By keeping your eyes healthy, you can ward off eye diseases and blindness, and continue to enjoy good vision into old age.

Eat a Diet Full of Healthy Foods

Eating healthy foods doesn’t just help your waistline. It also protects your vision. Your eyes love foods that are rich in omega-3 fatty acids as well as nutrient-dense foods, such as dark leafy greens. Meals with spinach, kale, salmon, halibut, and tuna are excellent if you want to protect your eyes. You don’t have to eat these foods with every meal but include them two or three times a week to maximize the benefits.

Get in Shape

High blood pressure, diabetes, and high cholesterol put you at risk for vision problems and eye diseases. Fortunately, you can fight off those conditions by getting in shape. Exercise at least three times a week to keep your eyes healthy. You don’t need a gym membership. You can simply go for a brisk walk in your neighborhood. That’s a free and fun way to exercise.

Stop Smoking

If you are a smoker, now is the time to quit. Smoking damages the optic nerve and increases your risk of developing cataracts and macular degeneration. It’s hard to maintain your vision if you smoke, so make today the day you quit for good. You’ll be amazed by how much better you feel when you stop smoking.

Protect Your Eyes From Sunlight and Projectiles

Did you know that sunlight can damage the cornea and the retina? It even increases the risk of developing cataracts. You can’t stay inside all the time, but you can protect your eyes by wearing sunglasses when you’re outside. Choose sunglasses that protect your eyes against UVB and UVA radiation.

You also need to wear protective eyewear when engaging in activities such as home repairs or sports. Projectiles can damage your eyes and could even lead to blindness. Throw on some protective eyewear so that you’ll be ready for anything that comes your way.

Avoid Eye Strain

Do you spend your days on the computer or doing close work? If so, you need to avoid eye strain that can damage your eyes. After 20 minutes of computer or close work, focus on an object that is 20 feet from where you are sitting or standing. Maintain your focus for 20 seconds before going back to work. Do this every 20 minutes so that you don’t wear your eyes out. If your eyes still feel tired, talk to your optometrist. You might have dry eyes.

Get Regular Eye Exams

You also need to undergo regular eye exams to protect your eyes. Your optometrist will create a baseline and look for changes that occur. If you’re ready for an examination, Northwest Ohio Vision Center in Bryan, Ohio, is here for you. Schedule an appointment by calling 419-452-4830.
